In this paper, I argue that the requirement of matching and a certain morphologi cal property of case clitics in Hindi conspires to rule out the existence of most kinds of free relatives in argument position. On the basis of these facts, I argue that matching does not belong to syntax and is either a morphological or phonological process. I show that information about morphological violations is not available for the purposes of economy computations in syntax (An earlier version of this paper was presented at CONSOLE 4 in Paris, December 1995)
