Sample 31.10-44.14 (Helsinki 1),
44.15-86.14 (Penn 1),
98.10-99.9 (Penn 2),
101.13-106.2 (Penn 3),
106.3-120.3 (Helsinki 2),
120.4-129.13 (Penn 4)
Remarks According to the titlepage, the original manuscript was "written about the latter End of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth." Since the text discusses Perrott's death in 1592, the date of composition must fall between that date and 1603. The titlepage does not identify the author, "probably because of the precarious political status of Sir John Perrott at the time. Nor has the anonymous biographer been later identified in the sources consulted" (Nevalainen, Terttu, and Helena Raumolin-Brunberg. 1993. Early Modern British English. In Matti Rissanen, Merja Kytö, and Minna Palander-Collin, eds., Early English in the computer age: Explorations through the Helsinki Corpus. Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter. 69).
The corpus sample includes several short letters, but omits pp. 86.15-98.9 and 99.10-101.12 because of major stylistic differences with the rest of the text, the sections in question resembling statutes.
