Sign Language Policies/Language Planning

This talk focuses on linguistic policies and sign languages. It will be presented a review of sign languages and their users, to contextualize the discussion about different aspects of language planning around the world. Sign languages are used in countries where spoken languages are used by the majority of the society. As minority languages, there are implications relating to their functions, roles and status that will be addressed. International organizations, as well as local ones, will have some impact on the linguistic policies related to sign languages. After presenting a general view of the situation of sign languages, the talk will focus on linguistic policies and language planning in Brazil, considering actions taken with respect to Brazilian Sign Language related to corpus construction, status and their use in education.
