Nuclear stress and the life cycle of operators

Norvin Richards (MIT)—Syntax.

I will offer a new argument for the frequently defended proposal that empty categories left by extraction of DP may be of different kinds, depending on the nature of the extraction (Perlmutter 1972, Cinque 1990, Postal 1994, 1998, 2001, O'Brien 2015, Stanton to appear, and much other work).  The argument will start with the observation that the distinction drawn by Postal (1994, 1998, 2001) between two kinds of extraction divides A-bar movements into the same two types outlined by Bresnan (1971) in her work on movement and nuclear stress.
