Research Topic
1. Case Alternation in Japanese (Nominative-Genitive Alternation called "Ga/No Conversion")
2. Focus (A phonetic realization of focus and second occurrence focus)
3. Developing an annotated corpus of discourse relations for Japanese texts

Research Program 1
model patterns of language variation and change based on sociolinguistic observation and theoretical formalization. Following the program, I have conducted quantitative research on syntactic variation in the midst of change.

Research Program 2
identify the property of focus in terms of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and phonetics. So far, I am focusing on phonetic realization of second occurrence focus in Japanese and phonetic realization of focused elements associated with focus-sensitive operators (work with Yong-cheol Lee).

Research Program 3
develop an annotated corpus of discourse relations for Japanese texts along the lines of the Penn Discourse Treebank. As our initial study, we started annotating discourse relations in Kyoto University Text Corpus (work with Rashmi Prasad and Aravind Joshi).
