Linguistics 603: Topics in Phonology

Topic for Fall 1998: Indo-European Accentology

Instructors:  Rolf Noyer & Donald Ringe

Linguistics 603, Topics in Phonology, is an advanced graduate level seminar focusing on some aspects of phonological theory.  The goal of this fall's course is to apply tools from theoretical phonology in the analysis of the accentual systems of a selection of Indo-European languages and families, with the ultimate objective of providing a reconstruction of the grammar of Proto-Indo-European accent and an explication of how this grammar evolved variously in the daughter languages.  This course should be of interest both to theoretical phonologists and to Indo-Europeanists.

Prerequisites.  Linguistics 530 (Phonology I) or equivalent.  Some familiarity with comparative Indo-European linguistics helpful.
