We now turn to vowels. Korean vowels are built around either a vertical or a horizontal line: in general, back vowels are horizontal and non-back (mid and front) vowels vertical.
First it starts with two simple vertical and horizontal lines, read as a high front and mid vowel respectively. Note that the high mid vowel is unrounded.
And yet another vertical line can be added to the two central vowels to make them fronted:
Korean also has glides, front and rounded, which are represented in rather unique ways.
