Eckert Workshop
The School as a Site for Ethnographic-
Sociolinguistic Research. Penelope Eckert
As the major joint site for kids in our culture, the school is an ideal
point of
departure for sociolinguistic studies. However, the
institutional characteristics of this site also present a set
of fieldwork challenges. This workshop will focus on (1)
understanding the constraints and advantages of the
institutional setting, (2) ununcovering kids' "native"
categories, (3) exploring the connections between native
categories and larger social configurations, (4) integrating
quantitative and qualitative analysis in ethnography, (5)
gathering linguistic data in the course of ethnography.
