Modern Mainstream Square Dance Modules

Following is my collection of square dance modules for Mainstream and Plus. They are sorted by starting position, and are secondarily sorted by ending position.

With a few exceptions, all of these modules start and end in one of the following setups:

Further, with a few minor exceptions, all of these modules begin and end with all of the couples normal, and with at least two of the four couples partnered. As it works out, there are 18 such positions. Click here to see them. I've given an animal name to each position as a mnemonic.

Note that I don't make any distinction between boxes and waves; I classify both as boxes. This means you have to keep track to make sure you're not calling something inappropriate from waves (e.g. AL, Star->). Another glitch: I mark modules as [Plus] if appropriate, but I don't count Acey Deucey as a Plus call because it is trivial to cue it at Mainstream.

The cute names for positions and modules are my own; I find it much easier to memorize this stuff if I associate vivid (albeit arbitrary) names with things. At some point I'll add a diagram of all of the 18 positions I use as start and beginning points to make it clearer.

I'm always changing this list. It was last updated on 24 Mar 2002. This HTML document was generated from an XML file; I also have a script to typeset the XML file in TeX. If you'd like a copy of the TeX file to print out, write to me.

This one has gone thru several revisions. There was a 15 Dec 1999 version (already a revision of earlier work) which ended with Wh & D. I changed it to Ferris Wh, Cts Sq-> 3 to give B1c instead of B2r. Can also start from any Bluebird or F2p. Can insert an 8-chain 4 after Girls Partner Trade (unusual application, because same sexes coupled). (The following comments held for the old Wh & D version; need to revise: If you insert a Couples Circ after Boys Circ, it gives a Leopard (B2c). Variant: After Star->, do Acey Deucy (Boys 2x); Gives F2p.)

If they started out in F3p (Baby Mammoth), you can Crossfire instead of Bend the line, Touch 1/4 (This is called "Ghostfire"). Can also do this call from Dingo Dog (L3o), which gives a Cardinal (B3r).

For more style, instead of having the outsides just partner trade, you can have then Roll Away w/ 1/2 Sashay and U-turn Back. You can interleave this with the calls to the wave.
