The two grids of letters are wordsearches. The fourteen pictures that come
with the food grid are in alphabetical order, and they represent BRANDY,
CHERRY, CUSTARD, DEAD FERRET, EELS, HOT PEPPERS, LOBSTER, MIXED NUTS,
MYSTERY MEAT, ROCK SALT, SEAWEED, SNOWCONES, SPRING WATER, and STEAK, each
of which can be found in the grid.

The creatures grid has the names of fourteen magical creatures in it,
namely PHOENIX, FAIRY, DRAGON, HIPPOGRIFF, KRAKEN, SALAMANDER, GRIFFIN,
CHIMAERA, SPHINX, BASILISK, HIPPOCAMPUS, YETI, UNICORN, and MANTICORE.

If you circle the foods in the one grid and the animals in the other and
lay the grids on top of each other, you'll find that there are exactly
fourteen squares that are circled in both grids: Each animal intersects
exactly one food - its favorite - at exactly one square, and vice versa.  
(These squares are capitalized on the grids shown here.) If you read these
fourteen squares from top to bottom in the food grid, the letters in them
spell out ANIMAL CRACKERS. If you read them from left to right in the
animal grid, they spell out HEAD OF THE HOUSE. So - as the flavortext
says, you're not done until every animal is fed - you must give animal
crackers to your House Master, who will then tell you that the solution to
the puzzle is SQUID.
