The bodhisattva vows

This translation of the four bodhisattva vows is in the tradition of the San Francisco Zen Center, founded by Shunryu Suzuki.

Bodhisattvas are beings who have taken a vow to attain nirvana only together with every other sentient being.

Beings are numberless. I vow to save them.

Delusions are inexhaustible. I vow to end them.

Dharma gates are boundless. I vow to enter them.

Buddha's way is unsurpassable. I vow to become it.
