VOLUNTEERS, PLEASE PRINT THIS PAGE AND BRING IT WITH YOU ON SATURDAY, APRIL 17.
Thank you again for volunteering to be session chairs for the PWGL
Symposium.
This is not a difficult position, but it is crucial to the success of the
conference. Your responsibilities are as follows:
1. To arrive at least 20-30 mins. before the beginning of your assigned
session.
2. To announce the session title at the beginning of the session.
3. To distribute handouts for each talk.
4. To introduce each speaker by name, department, and title of the talk
(in
case of doubt, try to verify pronunciation of names beforehand).
5. To notify a PWGL committee member in case there is an equipment
problem.
These people are easy to identify, because they will be wearing
PWGL tee-shirts.
6. To keep the time.
PLEASE BRING A WATCH with a second-hand or a digital
watch/stopwatch.
You will be given signs marked "10," "5" and "2" to
display at the appropriate times.
The break-up of the time is as follows: 30
minutes for each talk--20 minutes for the actual talk, 10 minutes for questions.
You should display the "10" sign when 10 minutes are left for the talk portion,
then the "5" sign when 5 min. remain, etc. Repeat for the question time.
It is okay for speakers to go over on the talking time, but make sure to
decrease the amount of question time accordingly. Because we are running concurrent
sessions, it is CRUCIAL that each talk end ON TIME, so that the timing of
the two rooms is coordinated.
For the exact times for each session, please
refer to the web page: ling.upenn.edu/symposium.
In addition, at the end of the session you will make the following
announcement
FOR SESSION 1: "There is a coffee break now in the Grad Student Lounge by
Room 327."
FOR SESSION 2: "Lunch is now available in the Grad Student Lounge by Room
327."
FOR SESSION 3: "The plenary session on 'Language Resource Creation and
Distribution at the Linguistics Data Consortium' will begin in 15 minutes
in Rainey Auditorium on the Ground Floor."
