LING265 - ENGLISH DIALECTS

This course explores the ways in which sentence structure varies across dialects of English. The course will review key concepts in syntactic analysis and apply them to data from a selection of varieties of English spoken in North America (e.g., African American English, Philadelphia English, Appalachian English, Canadian English) and other parts of the world (e.g., Belfast English, Singapore English, Indian English). We will explore the historical/social contexts of various dialects, while investigating examples of linguistic variation. In addition to studying known variation in English, students will be encouraged to bring new data to class for discussion and analysis.
