LING215 - CUNEIFORM LANGUAGES

Cuneiform is one of the world's oldest writing systems, capturing the words of people living in the Near East over 4000 years ago. This class introduces students to the different languages and cultures that used this script from its inception in the fourth millenium BCE to its extinction in the first century CE. We will investigate the challenges of studying ancient languages and explore the linguistic and cultural diversity represented in cuneiform texts. This class should be of interest to students considering a major in linguistics, anthropology or Near Eastern languages and civilizations.
