LING245 - PATTERNS IN LANGUAGE

This course investigates the kinds of patterns found in the structure of the world s languages. Lectures introduce linguistic typology, and the ways in which typological study and functional and formal theories of language inform one another. Core issues include apparent limits on structural variation, linguistic universals, and implicational hierarchies. In addition to lectures, students examine grammars of unfamiliar languages.
