LING265 - ENGLISH DIALECTS

This course explores the ways in which sentence structure varies across dialects of English. The course will review key concepts in syntactic analysis and apply them to data from varieties of English, including Philadelphia English, African American English, Appalachian English, Canadian English, Belfast English, and English spoken in the northwest of England. World Englishes may also be considered (e.g. Singapore English, Indian English). In addition to studying known variation in English, students will be encouraged to bring new data to class for discussion and analysis.
