• Julie Anne Legate to give a "Knowledge by the Slice" talk

    Julie Anne Legate will be giving a "Knowledge by the Slice" talk on November 18, 2014, at noon. The title of the talk is "Mapping the Boundaries of Human Language".

  • The MIT Press publishes Julie Anne Legate's new book, Voice and v

    Julie Anne Legate's new book, Voice and v. Lessons from Achenese, has been published by The MIT Press as a Linguistic Inquiry Monograph. In Voice and v, Julie Anne Legate investigates the syntactic structure of voice, using Acehnese as the empirical starting point. A central claim is that voice is encoded in a functional projection, VoiceP, which is distinct from, and higher than, vP.

  • Florian Schwarz giving talks at UCLA and Rutgers

    Florian Schwarz is giving talks at UCLA and Rutgers in October. The first talk is titled "Domain Restriction for Definite Descriptions - An Experimental Perspective" and it part of a panel on "Computational and experimental approaches to reference and anaphoric inference", AMPRA 2, held at UCLA on October 18, 2014. The title of the second talk is "Presuppositions and Implicatures in Online Processing" and it will be a colloquium talk given at Rutgers on October 24, 2014.

    A number of Penn linguists will be presenting at NWAV 43 which will be held October 23-26 in Chicago, Illinois. The conference is hosted jointly by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois Chicago campuses in downtown Chicago.

    Florian Schwarz, Anton Karl Ingason and Einar Freyr Sigurðsson will be presenting co-authored papers and posters at NELS 45. The conference will be held at MIT, October 30th - November 2nd, 2014.

    Florian Schwarz will be giving a talk at at Sinn und Bedeutung 19 at the University of Goettingen on September 17th, 2014. The title of the talk is "Scalar Implicature Processing: Slowly Accepting the Truth (Literally)" and it is co-authored with Jacopo Romoli and Cory Bill.

    Florian Schwarz gave a talk at SALT 24 on May 31, 2014. The conference was held at NYU. The title of the talk was "Presuppositions are fast, whether hard or soft - Evidence from the visual world paradigm". He will also be giving a talk at ZAS in Berlin on June 6, 2014, titled "Embedded Presuppositions: Experimental Investigations of Projection and Local Accommodation".
