Ling 603: Topics in Phonology

Pomoan Phonology

Prof. Gene Buckley
Fall 2014

Time: Wednesdays 3–5
Location: Phonetics Lab

This seminar will be a survey of all seven languages of the Pomoan language family, to which Kashaya belongs. They raise diverse issues in segmental and prosodic phonology as well as sound change and reconstruction. In addition, because they are generally understudied, this provides many opportunities for original research and analysis.

Because this is a seminar, the format will emphasize discussion rather than lecture. Articles will often be presented by students. Auditors are expected to participate in discussions and to present readings as well. The grade will be based primarily on a final paper on some topic relevant to the course content.
