LX Problem 1: English vowels
LX Problem 2: English consonants
The problems are basically computer programs teaching you English phonetics, unfortunately only available for Macs. They are located in the Mac room of the MMETS lab:

http://www.sas.upenn.edu/computing/mmets/

There should be a folder called 'LX' or 'LX downloads' on those machines, just open the folder and click on LX1 (use the headphones)--you'll be instructed to enter your name and the program will create a log file of your activities. The LX Problems will not be graded, they are just to help you learn phonetics and transcription--all you have to do is go through them, don't worry about making mistakes--the program has a funny way of correcting you, you'll see;-). If you're in the lab and have any technical problems running them, email me and if I'm around, I may be able to come and help you out.

I'd like to remind you that you're supposed to do the reading for today's class (22 May) and the reading assigned for next time, as shown on the main page--it is important that you read it beforehand. Please note that I've added two chapters from AE for next time--don't worry, it's light reading, and it's very good. I think you'll find the whole book very interesting. By the way, the book is required, even though it says 'recommended' in the bookstore. The Labov article (bulk pack) may not be as accessible--don't worry, we'll discuss it in class. Again, it's important that you read it.

Email me if you have any questions.
