Analysis of Field Project #1

due July 17th

The final part of the assignment is to analyse the (r) data collected in our rapid and anonymous study of (r) in Philadelphia. Your job is to re-organise the data to find out the answer to such questions as:

(1) Does the dissimilating word Girard show more (r-0) than Market?

(2) Do ethnic groups differ in their use of the variable (r)?

(3) Is there any correlation between (r) and age? That is, do we find evidence of change in apparent time?

(4) Do men and women differ in their use of (r)?

(5) Are their regional differences in the use of (r) within the city, independent of ethnicity?

In other words, we would like to see how, if at all, the independent variables (such as AGE, GENDER, ETHNICITY, etc.) affect the dependent variable (r)—be sure to include significance levels for any results reported.

Your report should have three parts:

A. a description of what variables you decided to examine and why

B. several tables or graphs

C. the conclusions you draw from the tables or graphs and any broader implications you think these might have, based on discussion in class and your readings.

The report should be between 5 and 10 pages long and should be submitted in hard copy.
