Linguistics 550
Assignment 2

Due: Thursday, September 24

Exercise 1

As we saw in Notes 2, do so substitutes for instances of V'. For some reason, however, it is not able to substitute for V. This is illustrated by the contrast between (1a,b) and (1c).

(1) a.   They eat five apples every day, and we do so, too.
b.   They eat five apples every day, and we do so every week.
c. * They eat five apples every day, and we do so six pears every week.

In light of (1) and (2), what is the proper treelet for waited? Explain.

(2) a.   They waited for five hours, and we did so, too.
b.   They waited for five hours, and we did so for even longer.

Exercise 2

A. Substitute an appropriate form of do so for each of bracketed sequences in (3)-(7), and record your acceptability judgments, using standard notation.
Note: Be sure to give separate acceptability judgments for each verb and each construction. The reason is that it is unknown a priori whether a particular verb will behave alike in distinct configurations or whether a particular configuration will behave alike with distinct verbs. They might, but if so, those are facts to be established rather than taken for granted.

(3) a.   They [ [ [ gave ] the money ] to Tommy ] .
b. They [ [ gave ] Tommy ] the money ] .
(4) a. They [ [ [ sent ] the money ] to Tommy ] .
b. They [ [ [ sent ] Tommy ] the money ] .
(5) a. They [ [ [ drove ] the car] in the morning. ]
b. They [ [ [ drove ] to the store ] in the morning. ]
c. They [ [ [ [ drove ] the car ] to the store ] in the morning. ]
(6) They [ [ [ put ] the dishes ] in the dishwasher ] .
(7) They [ [ [ worded ] the letter ] carefully ] .

B. Using the grammar tool in do so substitution, build trees for each of the nine sentences in (3)-(7).

You will need to construct your own treelets as follows:

To attach a phrase as a complement, drag it to V'.
To attach a phrase as a specifier, drag it to VP.

Any adjuncts should be integrated into your treelets by the two-step process of adjunction discussed in Notes 2. To implement adjunction, first click on the target of adjunction (here, V') to produce a copy of it. Then attach the adjunct by dragging it onto the higher copy of the target of adjunction. When you have a good understanding of how adjunction works, you can hold down the command (= apple) key and drag the adjunct onto the target of adjunction (be sure to depress the command key before, during, and after the entire drag). The grammar tool will then generate the desired structure for you in a single step.

C. Give the treelets for the verbs in (3)-(7) that are required by your judgments in (A).

Note: If your first reaction to (C) is that your answer to this question is implicit in the trees you just built in (B), you are completely correct. However, until I'm sure that you and the trees you build are on the same wavelength, I'd like to hear the answer from you explicitly.
