Formal phonology, especially metrical and syllable structure; interactions of phonology and morphology; the relation of phonetic and functional explanation to phonological theory; the expression of the categories of spoken language in the world's writing systems; Native American linguistics (Kashaya, Alsea); Ethio-Semitic linguistics (Tigrinya); Manam.
